On Thursday last, June 19 in the Bohemian Centre 90 members of the Ardee Concert Band received an award for their hard work and dedication throughout the year and to mark the next part of their progression in the 160+ strong organisation. The Ardee Concert Band recorder group got the night off to a musical start under the baton of Darren Kirk and Sarah Clare, both members being leaving cert Students who finished their state exams only a couple of hours earlier. The 20 members left the platform receiving a certificate to mark their success in Assessments and participation in the Recorder Group.

Kevin Reilly then took his Junior Band to the stage to showcase their musical achievements of the last 9 months performing the Star Wars Theme Tune and Armada. After a rapturous applause each student went back to their Proud Families with their certificate to mark their success in their recent Assessment and progression in the Junior band so far and some members of this band received their RIAM Grade Certs.

Last but not least the Ardee Concert Youth Band alongside John Gaynor took to the stage and performed their recent Competition pieces that they performed in Cork school of Music last April. Each Member in this band recently sat their Grade exams under the Royal Irish Academy of Music in the Band rooms last May. They were presented with their Certificate of Achievement for the exam along with a medal to mark their participation in the National Competitions in Cork.

Light Refreshments where served after the ceremony and everyone had the chance to have a catch up on the night and each member and their families went home very proud of what they achieved on the night. Many Thanks to Kevin Reilly for acting as MC for the night.

The Ardee Concert Band attended the 125th Co Louth Agricultural Show in Bellurgan Park on Sunday June 14th 2015.

The band performed for the second year at the show on the steps at the front of the dwelling house which still holds all its extensive period features. “The band were well received at the show and we had a very enjoyable day in the fantastic summer sun, there was plenty of sun cream making its way around the band,” Said PRO Sinéad Nutley. “There was many an onlooker bobbing their head or tapping their feet along with the band’s summer programme which was directed by Alan Kelly.”

The Agricultural Show showcased the best of produce, skills, crafts and traditions of the county and proved to be the perfect family day out. Overlooking the beautifully planted lawn the band played to a sun drenched audience who all relaxed with a beverage whilst basking in the summer sun.

Over the stream there were numerous classes for arts, crafts, horticulture, photography, baking, poultry and waterfowl, flower arranging classes as well as machinery on view, livestock and pet competitions as well as a funfair and bouncing castles to keep the wee ones entertained. Classes for children and those with special needs were also available.

39 young members of Ardee Concert Junior Band and Ardee Concert Youth Band travelled to The Festival of Wind in the Royal Irish Academy of Music on Saturday 6 June. It was an incredible day and congratulations to everyone who took part. Some of the musical highlights for the youth members were:

-Playing a concert programme in front of their peers from other bands and in front of some the very best instrumentalists and music tutors in Ireland
-Getting very constructive feedback on their performances
-Participating in master classes with these tutors
-Listening to excellent performances from the other junior bands
-Listening to demonstrations of flute, clarinet, trumpet, French horn, percussion
-Being part of a 70 member massed band under the excellent direction of Fergus O’Carroll and playing three pieces together that they had never seen before

It wasn’t all music orientated for the whole day, every one needs a bit of down time and relaxation in the sun! After Heading off to Dublin on a bus for a day out with fellow members of the band and sitting on the floor together in one of the practice rooms eating their packed lunch they enjoyed the sun that came out to play in the playground in Merrion Square in the sunshine at lunch time and as a treat from the band for their hard work all day, they stopped at Mc Donnells on the way home to fill the big appetite that they had worked up at the festival.

But most important, they were all part of something big and wonderful and important, and each of them were there because the organisers wanted them to be there.

From Ardee Concert Bands side, a major thank you to Jen and Peter Mc Keever, Fiona Reilly, and Lesley Gorman for looking after the young members of the band and to Kevin Reilly for Acting as MD for the Youth Band and for all his organisation on the day.

Also a huge thank you to all of the organisers of the day in the Academy; Brendan, Bill, Fergus, Berginald, Chris and Joe for all their hard work.

Congratulations to the three recipients of the scholarships awarded from the Royal Irish Academy of Music today for the Orchestral Manoeuvres event in July & especially to Ardee’s own Jenny Satelle in receiving this prize.

We are proud to host world renowned Downshire Brass here at the Bohemian Centre on Saturday May 16th for a combined Spring Concert with Ardee Concert Senior Band from 8pm. Tickets are €10 and all proceeds are in aid of Ardee Hospice Homecare Movement.

The Ardee Youth Band will also perform on the night, their first performance since their very successful trip to Cork School of Music at the IABCB 50th National Band Championships.

Updated 29/4/15 – Ardee Bands make the 660km round trip to perform at the IABCB 5oth National Championships

Ardee Concert Youth and Senior Bands left the wee county in convoy on Saturday, April 11th at 6.30am to travel to the rebel county for the Irish Association of Brass and Concert Bands 50th National Band Championships in the Cork School of Music.

Our Youth band of 37 took to the stage at 12.30pm to partake in Section 4 Concert to perform 3 pieces; A March, A Slow Piece of Repertoire and an Own Choice piece of any nature chosen by the band. They performed Johann Straus’ Radetzsky March, Star Trek’s: The Inner Light and their own choice piece entitled The Best of Queen. They had great competition this year with 6 bands in their section, enjoying the performance as much as they did, it was also perceived in the adjudicator’s comments as he noted the bands “medleys and rhythms were commendably alert and crisp, with effective Articulation”

After their section was complete the adjudication got underway with the Adjudicator Michael Ball taking to the lectern and delivering the results after a brief chat of what he was looking for in the bands performances for the day.

Placing 4th, the band and their conductor John Gaynor where happy with the result as they knew themselves that they played really well and as a bonus they picked up two extra prizes. They collected the Larry Daly Memorial Cup for most promising band and the trophy for the Best Own Choice Piece of the section.

To celebrate they were brought to McDonalds, accompanied by committee members, where on route they paraded their trophies through the rebel county streets to show them off to all of Cork City on the way. For many members of the youth band, this was their first ever time competing in any kind of Competition, these kids along with the rest of the band, did their Families, the Organisation, the town of Ardee and most importantly themselves proud, as this is no mean feat.

Next to take to the School of Music’s Curtis Auditorium Stage, draped with a backdrop of the grand Neiland pipe organ to complement its Kenneth Jones chamber organ was our 40 strong Senior Band. We performed in the Advanced Concert Section. Under the Baton of Brendan Breslin, he conducted the band in their performance of Peter Graham’s Gaelforce and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite. We placed joint 3rd alongside Rathfarnham Concert Band, St. James’ Brass and Reed Band taking Second place and Dublin Concert Band taking 1stPlace.

“All of us here at Ardee Concert Band would like to congratulate our Neighbours in the Lourdes Brass Band, Drogheda in their tremendous 1st place win in the Advanced Brass Section,” Said PRO Sinéad Nutley. Entering the Brass Advanced Section on Sunday April 12th was their first ever time to perform in section 1 and without fail they took the title from their neighbours Drogheda Brass Band who received Best Own Choice piece of the Section.

St. Patricks Day Festivities and Church Gate Collection

Our Ardee Concert senior Band have had a busy couple of weeks. As well as our two hour twice weekly band rehearsals, Home Practice and giving lessons to our younger members, the band have taken part in the Ardee St. Patrick’s Day mass and Parade, represented the organisation along with other band members and parents for our Church Gate Collection in Ardee and Ballaphousta and attending an extra three hour bumper rehearsal for our National Band competitions entry’s which are being held April in the Rebel County. After playing 12 noon mass in Ardee under the baton of Kevin Reilly, the members didn’t waste much time as we made our way to our band rooms on Ashwalk to form up the ranks for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Ardee, we received a great welcome from all of the people who gathered to watch. All of the band members were honored with the enthusiastic applause that we received as we marched up the main street. The band members might make it look easy but it is quite difficult to march and play music at the same time. Great credit must go especially to our younger senior band members of the band who were marching for the very first time and special well done to our Youth Members Emer, Lisa, Anne-Marie and Ryan who made up the colour guard rank and led the band for their first ever march, the first of many to come for these youngsters.

We are very grateful to the local people who supported our Church Gate Collection in Ardee and Ballaphousta over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of March. The people of Ardee and surrounding area are always very supportive of our organisation that has a long and illustrious history spanning 150 years with the town.

The senior and youth bands are now in full swing for the next couple of weeks as we prepare and put the final touches to our Test and Choice Pieces, for our respected sections in which we will compete, on April 12th at the Irish Association of Brass and Concert Bands National Championships being held in Cork School of Music.

After which it will be full steam ahead for another busy summer schedule for both bands, so keep an eye on our Facebook page and on our website for the dates in which the bands will be out and about in and around the region.

Hectic weeks ahead for us here in Ardee Concert Band
St Patrick’s Day is usually the busiest day of the year for us in Ardee Concert Band and this year is no exception. The Ardee Concert Band will play 12 noon mass in the church of the nativity of our lady, Ardee under the Baton of Kevin Reilly. Our members will then have a quick turnaround as they have to be back at the band rooms for 2.15pm to form up the ranks for the Parade at three o clock, our biggest audience of the year by far.

Next weekend the 21st and 22nd March are busy for the band again as it’s the weekend of our Church Gate Collection at all masses in Ardee and Ballapousta. The people of the town and surrounding areas are always very generous to our community Organisation, these are tough times for everyone and the band provides an outlet for many of the towns’ teenagers and children, teaching them music, opening up and broadening their cultural side of their lives to music and also providing leisure activities for the members as a reward for months of hard work throughout the academic year.
The members of our Youth and Senior Band’s have a busy few weeks ahead also, as they prepare for the National Band Championships which are being held in the Cork Institute of Technology, School of Music Theatre on the 11th and 12th of April, both bands are working very hard towards these competitions. Irish Association of Brass and Concert Bands: North East Region Solo and Ensemble Competitions

Has the North East Band World Got Talent?

The Irish Association of Brass and Concert Bands North East Regional Solo & Ensemble Competitions went off without a hitch on Sunday, 22 February 2015. Hosted by the Ardee Concert Band in the Bohemian Centre, Ardee, the Adjudicator for the day was Mr. Michael Alcorn conductor of Downshire Brass Band, Belfast.

Five bands from across the North East Region took part in the free Sunday afternoon event; they included Ardee Concert Band, Drogheda Brass Band, Lourdes Brass Band, Drogheda, Navan Silver Band and St. Mary’s Brass and Reed Band, Kingscourt.

Special thanks go to Kevin Reilly, Event Organiser and Treasurer of the NE Region of the IABCB, without who the competitions would never have happened. Thanks also to Michael Alcorn for making the journey for the adjudication role, Edward Holly the accompanist for his wonderful piano playing and Peter McKeever, compere for the day. Many Thanks to all the helpers from Ardee Concert Band for their background work and dedication, they never cease to amaze at the effort and time they give their organisation and the local banding circle.

Lastly well done to all the musicians who took part on the day and to their tutors, it’s not an easy fate to stand up in front of an audience and play a piece of music knowing your being critiqued on everything you play by the Adjudicator, Winning is just a bonus after that hurdle is overcome.
